Architectural Insights: Joseph Mackin, Jr.

Details make the difference to architect Joseph Mackin, Jr. with Period Architecture, Ltd. in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

"We are a small, detail-oriented firm focused on designing homes that are unique, yet rooted in traditional styles," says Mackin, president and partner at Period Architecture. "Our firm started in 2010 and we've been able to design some stunning homes for our clients."

One of the details that Mackin, who has his AIA and LEED AP certifications, focuses on for his homes are the roofs.

"The roof is the 'icing on the cake' for a house," says Mackin. "It is a detail to be carefully selected for both aesthetical and functional value."

Synthetic Slate Shingles

For several recent home designs, Mackin and his team have chosen synthetic slate shingles from DaVinci Roofscapes. "The authentic slate look of the polymer roofing felt right for the style of the homes we are creating," says Mackin. "We have found that the DaVinci slate alternative roofing looks convincing and holds up well in our geographic area. The bonus is the composite slate roofing is much more cost effective than real slate.”

"We recognize a home is a reflection of its owners.  A home tells the story of who they are and what they value. From the beginning to the end of a project, our process encourages clients to share in the experience of creating a unique and personal home. When we recommend a product like DaVinci roofing to a client, it is with the belief the polymer roofing will absolutely enhance the overall home design."
