Coastal Commitment

DaVinci RoofscapesWould you want to live on the California coast? Sure there's great weather and tremendous views, but there's also serious weather conditions to contend with on a regular basis.

Consider the salt air, sea spray and winds that whip up against coastal homes. Then there's the unrelenting ultraviolet rays from the sun. And, to cause even more worries, there's the threat of wildfire spread during various times of the year. All of these elements can combine to cause headaches for coastal homeowners.

Architectural West magazine recently ran an article on how polymer roofing meets the heavy demands Mother Nature places on homes along the California coast.  We're sharing that article with you (click HERE) so you can learn more about how DaVinci Roofscapes synthetic shake and slate shingles stand up to Mother Nature --- and win!

What to Look for in a New Roof

Between strong winds, heavy rains, and threats like fire and natural disaster, simply having a roof over one’s head is not always enough.

When choosing a strong roof designed to protect your home and its occupants, here are some things to consider:

Fire Prevention

Real wood shake roofs can be extremely combustible and serve as kindling for wildfires. If you live in an area with even a remote possibility of wildfires, consider investing in a roof that resists flame spread. While no roof will resist a “ground up” fire that engulfs the entire home, polymer roofing tiles that are installed with proper underlayments can help protect a home from wind-driven embers that can ignite the roof.

Eco-Friendly Roof

Impact Resistance

Whether you live in an area prone to direct or indirect threats of tornadoes or hurricanes, or you simply live in a region that experiences strong storms, take note: flying debris associated with severe weather can become dangerous in high winds. Damage from airborne tree branches and flying loose items can be devastating to a roof not equipped for impact. Having a synthetic shake or composite slate roof that has achieved the highest ratings on impact resistance tests can help protect your property.

“Even if your roof has stood up to strong weather conditions in the past, it’s important to make sure it’s still in shape before the next round of bad weather hits,” says Mark Hansen, vice president of sales and marketing for DaVinci Roofscapes, which makes high-performing polymer roofing products that have achieved the highest grades possible on multiple industry tests.

Examine the roof yourself or have a professional roofer assess for damage you may not be able to see from the ground. They can make repairs or recommend a new roof replacement.

No matter where you live, it’s important that roof tiles can handle wear and tear. Ideally, roof tiles should resist curling, fading, cracking, mold, algae, fungus and insects. Roofing products that come with a strong warranty can offer you peace of mind.

Other Considerations

Protecting your home and family should be your number one consideration. Luckily, durable composite roofing options abound that offer the authentic look of real cedar roofing or natural slate beauty, as well as environmental sustainability. For the benefits of an eco-friendly roof, it’s a good idea to seek out products that are completely recyclable and meet standards set by organizations like the Cool Roof Rating Council and the U.S. Green Building Council.

Architectural Insights: Kevin Price

At DaVinci Roofscapes, we have the opportunity to work with many architects and designers on a daily basis. Many of these people, like Kevin Price of Kevin Price Designs in Utah, specify DaVinci polymer roofing again and again on their projects ... which is why we want to share their insights with you!

Q: Why do you keep including DaVinci polymer roofing material on your home designs?

A: First and foremost, I like the way they look. When I look at the versatility of the DaVinci products I know I can always find a style that will fit my needs. The other point about the DaVinci sustainable roofing that makes it easy to sell to clients is its durability.

Q: What are the features/benefits of DaVinci products that work best for your geographical setting in Utah?

A: The Park City area is a tremendous test for composite roofing products, and DaVinci is the only product I’ve used that has been able to hold up to our severe weather conditions, such as extreme freeze/thaw cycles; ice build-up; high UV light. The latter being especially important, because I’ve seen a lot of other roofing products lose their color and eventually look cheap. DaVinci is the only synthetic roofing material I specify.

Q: What have the reactions been of your homeowner clients to your recommendations of the DaVinci imitation slate and composite shake products?

A:  My clients are always very complimentary of the DaVinci products. Clearly, the DaVinci products cost a little more than other products that will not hold up as well, but I’ve never had a client come back to me and say they wish they hadn’t spent that extra money on the roof – quite the contrary, when they see their neighbor’s roofs start to lose their color or see their neighbor’s asphalt roofs start to look a little cheap as time goes by, they often comment to me that they are so glad I specified the DaVinci product. They almost wear it as a badge of pride.

Q: What insights would you share with other designers and architects about specifying DaVinci green roofing materials?

A: Designers and architects need to become familiar enough with the DaVinci products to be able to convince their clients of its superiority over cheaper alternatives.  This roof is an investment for the future and for homeowner peace-of-mind. Overall, the DaVinci designer roofs make me look good, because they put a refined edge on my homes that no other roofing material can emulate.

Honestly, DaVinci Roofscapes Polymer Roofing Wins with Contractors

Fake Cedar ShakeYou've heard it before: Honesty is the best policy.

That policy works for Scott Cunningham with Turner Morris, Inc. out of Colorado --- especially when it comes to talking about DaVinci Roofscapes sustainable roofing.

"DaVinci is a true stand alone in the synthetic world," says Cunningham. "I've been installing DaVinci for nine years and have never had any significant product issues. The product itself is durable and withstands the stringent demands of our high alpine environment."

For other installers in high elevations Cunningham has an installation tip. "Extra caution should be taken when switching traditional cedar shakes to synthetic cedar shake as their insulation value and breathability is very much different."

Checking in with Aaron Adams

A few weeks back we caught up with Aaron Adams, Central Region Manager for DaVinci Roofscapes, during one of his rare trips home. He spends many days traveling to roofing job sites to support our customers and can routinely be found anywhere from Minnesota to South Dakota to Louisiana.

Aaron's back in town again, so we're sharing more of his insights on the roofing industry.

Q: When you're on the jobsite, what are roofers telling you about the ease or challenges of installing DaVinci polymer roofing products?

A: Roofers equate our roofing tile install to a slightly faster cedar shake roof. Faster because they don't have to cull broken or knotted pieces, felt interlay is not typical, and they can be fastened with gun nails. One of the challenges they face is making sure new crews know how to hide cuts effectively.

Q: How do you see homeowners responding to DaVinci roofing materials?

A: The homeowners I've met with love the aesthetics of the polymer shake and composite slate. They look forward to not dealing with the ongoing maintenance of products like cedar shakes. Another piece of feedback I'm getting is that homeowners are relieved that they'll never again have to deal with bug infestations (like silverfish or termites) that they've had in the past with cedar shake roofing.

Q: What about the number of colors available in DaVinci products --- how do homeowners respond to having 50 standard color options?

A: Homeowners really seem to love the options and the ability to personalize their designer roof for their own home. Being able to put together a truly unique color combination that ideally suits their taste using the Color Designer Tool is a big hit.

Q: If you could sum up the message of DaVinci sustainable roofing products in one sentence, what would it be?

A: From color, virtually any steep slope roofing architectural design, severe weather conditions or green roofing options, DaVinci composite roofing products are up to the challenge!

Green Roof Systems are Cool and Energy Efficient

Cool off this summer ... and EVERY summer ... when you invest in a DaVinci Roofscapes Cool Roof.

Green Roof SystemsOur EcoBlend polymer roof tiles are specially engineered to be energy efficient. These-hardworking imitation slate and synthetic shake tiles help reduce the cooling load for your home with their higher emissivity and reflectivity rates. They're also ENERGY STAR® rated, so they help increase the overall efficiency of your sustainable roofing.

How do they work? DaVinci EcoBlend composite roofing tiles reflect heat and light from the sun away from your home or business to help reduce the amount of energy it requires to keep your building cool.  As a result, our products are considered green roofing materials that last a long time AND help the environment.

DaVinci green roofing options have achieved a Cool Roof Rating by the Cool Roof Rating Council. Qualified colors include Weathered Gray (in Medium, Medium Light, Medium Dark, Light and Dark) and Gray (in Dark, Light and Medium). These tiles may help you save 7 to 15 percent on cooling costs by reflecting light away from the home instead of absorbing it, thus avoiding adding extra heat to your home.

Countdown to National Curb Appeal Month

Summertime and the living is easy ... especially if you have low-maintenance products and sustainable roofing on your home!

With the launch of the Second Annual "National Curb Appeal Month" in August, the team at DaVinci Roofscapes reminds you that adding easy-care composite roofing to your home is a smart decision.

Designer RoofAccording to the 2015 Cost Versus Value Study conducted by Remodeling magazine, investments in a variety of exterior home improvement projects on a midrange priced home can have solid return-on-invest for homeowners. The study reports that a roof replacement can have a projected 71.6 percent cost versus value recoup.

If you're going to make home improvement enhancements during National Curb Appeal Month, color expert Kate Smith has some tips.

"Strategically placed 'pops of color' on a home exterior can make a huge difference in creating positive curb appeal," says Smith with Sensational Color. "Whether it's window boxes filled with bright red geraniums, a front door painted colonial blue or trim pieces in a striking deep green, colorful accents can really help a home stand out in the neighborhood.

"My advice is to add 'top down' color to the home to gain a cohesive and appealing exterior. Start with the color of your designer roof, then work your way down to the siding, trim, doors and landscaping. The colors should all complement each other. Even if you have a sedate color scheme, there's nothing wrong with shaking up a home with a warm, welcoming color on the front door and colorful landscaping."

Round Two for DaVinci Roofscapes Installation at Hotel Breakers

The saying "life's a roller coaster" certainly resonates with roofer Jim Carson. He and his team from A-STAR have been "up on the roof" for the second winter in a row installing

Bellaforté simulated slate roofing high atop the Hotel Breakers at Cedar Point theme park.

With Cedar Point's famous roller coasters as the backdrop, the A-STAR team installed 450 squares of composite slate tile from DaVinci Roofscapes --- plus on four turrets --- in a custom Milano blend featuring combinations of gray and purple tones. The project started in November of 2014 and lasted until late April 2015. (See Cedar Point Hotel Gets Bellaforté Roof)

"Our experience with installation on the first phase of this project last year made it a bit easier for the second phase," says Carson, vice president of A-STAR out of Macedonia, Ohio. "However, there's nothing that can really help when temperatures hit record lows and with the brutal snowfall we had this year."

Backed by a lifetime warranty, all DaVinci green roofing materials are designed to remain flexible at extreme temperatures, making it possible to install roofing tiles during all types of weather. The DaVinci resin system for all products has passed the freeze-thaw ICC-ES Test (Acceptance Criteria AC07, section 4.9) with exposure to temperatures from -40 F to 180 F in 22 hour cycles for approximately a month.

DaVinci sustainable roofing products have also undergone the accelerated weathering test ASTM 4798 test for 4,500 hours with very little significant change in tensile strength. That test is six months of actual exposure, but is equivalent to several years of exposure to the sun. The test replicates real world weather extremes such as high temperatures, moisture and thermal shock.

"One of the chief reasons Bellaforté slate roofing tiles were chosen for the Hotel Breakers re-roofing project originally was because the installation could be done in cold weather without having to warm the polymer roof tiles before installation," says Carson. "This is the final phase of the installation, which has gone very well. While there may be more re-roofing projects on site here, I don't believe we'll be battling Mother Nature as much in the future."

Green Roofing Options for St. Patrick's Day!

St. Patrick's Day traditionally boasts all things green. And, at DaVinci Roofscapes we want to celebrate this special day by talking about our green roofs!

We offer four standard colors of polymer roofing products, including Light Green, Medium Green, Dark Green, Green Stone. But, more importantly, we're in the business of providing homeowners with green roofing options.

Sustainable roofing products like our composite shake and imitation slate roofing tiles are environmentally friendly, can be recycled and have a lifetime limited warranty, which helps you save green in your wallet. (see New DaVinci Roof = Cash in Your Wallet)

Many homeowners also find that their homeowner's insurance premiums are reduced when they invest in synthetic slate roofing or composite shake. That's because the Class A Fire Rating of our luxury roof tiles makes it a smart investment.

Here are some more green facts about DaVinci lightweight roofing materials:

- Selecting synthetic DaVinci Shake roof tiles over real cedar shake roofing saves trees.

- When you choose DaVinci Slate roof tiles over natural slate, you're making a smaller carbon footprint on the environment.

- DaVinci eco friendly roof tiles contribute less to landfills and use less of the earth's resources than asphalt roof shingles because they can be recycled.

When it comes to the environment, every little step helps. See Return Those DaVinci Scraps! and Happy Earth Day from DaVinci Roofscapes!

Why Choose DaVinci Roofscapes for Commercial Projects? TCO!

Across the country new construction and remodeling commercial project planners are discovering that polymer roofing options from DaVinci Roofscapes deliver dependable results. From New York to Oklahoma to Colorado, DaVinci composite roofing can be found topping off university buildings, hotels, country clubs, apartment buildings and churches.

"Project managers reviewing the 'Total Cost of Ownership' aspects when making commercial project roofing decisions continue to be impressed by DaVinci composite roofing products," says Mike Ward, vertical market manager for DaVinci Roofscapes. "They're determining which roofing products have the greatest return on investment from the standpoint of durability, longevity, low-maintenance costs and aesthetics. These considerations point them to DaVinci."

According to Ward, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis plays favorably for polymer roofing products because they resist impact, fire, insects, mold and algae. Other advantages that commercial project planners look for in sustainable roofing include the color being blended throughout each tile and a strong roof warranty.

Polymer Slate RoofGaillardia Country Club

The elegant 55,000-square foot, three-level clubhouse at Gaillardia Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City now boasts a new Bellaforté Slate Black-VariBlend polymer roof from DaVinci.

"The new owners wanted 600 squares of a Class 4 impact-resistant roof system to replace the concrete tiles on their 15-year old country club," says Andy Lacks, vice president of commercial roofing with Mallard Construction out of Oklahoma City, Okla. "They wanted a durable roof system that would fit the high-end neighborhood surrounding the Gaillardia Country Club while withstanding severe weather. Our confident recommendation was the DaVinci impact-resistant tiles for this job."

Historic Hotel Breakers

Opened more than 100 years ago, the 650-room Hotel Breakers is the original on-property hotel at the Cedar Point theme park in Ohio. In 2014 hotel management decided to invest in the European-VariBlend of Bellaforté imitation slate tiles.

"One reason why Bellaforté was chosen was because the installation could be done in cold weather without having to warm the roof tiles before installation," says Jim Carson, vice president of A-STAR out of Macedonia, Ohio. "The hotel is on the shores of Lake Erie. That's a challenging situation, especially since we experienced the worst Cleveland winter in 30 years right in the middle of the installation!"

LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge

Opened in late 2013, the multi-purpose LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge in Tennessee includes 232,000-square feet of meeting and exhibit space in a sprawling lodge-type setting. Topping off the impressive structure is 965 squares of Single-Width Slate alternative roofing tiles from DaVinci in the Evergreen-VariBlend of light and dark green lightweight tiles to complement the facility's Smoky Mountain setting.

"The size of this complex plus the building code limitations made it impossible for us to specify weighty, expensive real slate for the roof," says Michael Smelcer, principal with SRA Architects, Inc. "After researching our options, we selected the DaVinci Single-Width Slate product because of aesthetics, weight and Class A fire classification. The owners of the center were very open to using this particular polymer slate roofing because it gave them the mountain lodge look they desired."

North Abbey Apartments

New life has been given to the historic 1888 Protestant Episcopal Church of the Covenant in Philadelphia. After several years of renovation --- including the addition of a new DaVinci synthetic slate shingles overhead --- the church's 12,500-square foot property has been converted into 16 luxury apartments called North Abbey.

"The Bellaforté Slate roof we selected brings historical accuracy to the project while allowing us to have a roof that resists fire, impact, rot and decay," says real estate broker and developer Jordan Brody. "We were sold on this roof because of its aesthetic appeal, durability and longevity."  (Pictures coming soon).

Condos, Churches and Colleges ... Oh My!

At DaVinci Roofscapes you'll find us "topping" off all types of commercial projects around the country from banks to shopping centers to hotels.

Imitation SlateLeading our effort to share the attributes of polymer roofing products with commercial project managers is Mike Ward, our national sales manager in charge of vertical markets. Mike's favorite acronym to throw around these days is "TCO" ... and here's why:

Q: Mike, what does "TCO" stand for?

A: TCO stands for Total Cost of Ownership. This is what property owners, investors and other stakeholders look at carefully when making a purchasing decision. It involves an analysis of the total cost of making a product investment.

Q: How does TCO relate to DaVinci's synthetic roofing material?

A: A TCO analysis involving a decision on roofing products for a theme park, condo community or even a restaurant evaluates how much the roof costs versus the long-term payback potential. For DaVinci composite roofing, we fare great because our imitation slate and shake alternative tiles are low maintenance products backed by a 50 year roof warranty. We also score high because our luxury roof products never need to be treated for mold, insects or algae.

Q: What other aspects help DaVinci roofs be a good investment for commercial projects?
A: Actually, the same features that make the slate alternative and simulated shake roofing good for homeowners make it even better for commercial projects. For example, DaVinci tiles have the highest impact rating, are fire-resistant and can even be power washed. Our sustainable roofing tiles resist water absorption, curling, cracking and fading ... making them durable for many years.

Simulated Shake RoofingQ: What are some easy-to-recognize commercial projects where the general public might see DaVinci synthetic roofing material?

A: That's easy. Various restaurant chains such as Cheddars, Bahama Breeze and Starbucks; some Bass Pro Shops, The North Face store, along with well-known institutions such as Notre Dame, Mount St. Marys College and the campuses of the State University of New York.

Q: Finally, where can people find you if they're interested in DaVinci products for commercial projects?

A: I'm always happy to talk about commercial projects and our eco friendly roof systems. Call me at 1-888-362-4957.

Happy Earth Day from DaVinci Roofscapes!

Happy birthday to the Earth! Started in 1970, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide.

In case you didn't know, Earth is the third planet from the sun and the largest of the terrestrial planets. The Earth is the only planet not named after a god and its name comes from the word "erda" which means ground or soil. Very appropriate since the Earth has the greatest density of all planets in the solar system.

During Earth Day the world focuses on the environment --- how to make it better, take care of it and reduce impact that can harm our planet. At DaVinci Roofscapes, every day is Earth Day. That's because our manufactured slate and shake roofing tiles are 100% recyclable and have an extensive lifespan --- backed by a 50-year warranty.

What makes our polymer roofing tiles earth-friendly? DaVinci composite roofing products are manufactured from a proprietary engineered polymer that includes multiple virgin resins, organic fire retardant, state-of-the-art color and UV stabilizers and inorganic pigments that are safe for the environment. Selecting synthetic DaVinci Shake roof tiles over wood shakes saves trees. Selecting synthetic DaVinci Slate roof tiles over natural slate saves labor and fuel and offers a smaller carbon footprint by reducing waste.

Here's another fact. DaVinci Slate roof shingles weigh one-third as much as comparable natural slate, so energy is saved in transporting our composite slate tiles. And, DaVinci roofing tiles contribute less to landfills and use less of the earth’s resources than asphalt roof shingles because they can be recycled.

Go Green with DaVinci Synthetic Roof Tiles

Recycle DaVinci TilesAre you looking for green products for your home or business? What about on your roof?

It's no wonder you happened upon our website, as our imitation slate shingles and synthetic shake shingles are considered green roof systems because of our LEED® Certification Process as well as our recycling program.

We contribute to the LEED® Certification Process through:

  • Sustainable Sites
  • Water Efficiency
  • Materials and Resources

We talk more in detail about the above mentioned contributions on our website.  Read more about DaVinci's LEED Certification Process

In addition to LEED efforts, we also offer a recycling program for our shingles.  Our recycling program has two options:

  1. Waste from a job site
  2. Expired tiles

Scraps from an installation can be returned to our plant to keep them out of the landfill. Likewise, after DaVinci roof tiles have lived their 50 year life or longer, then can be returned to our facility for recycling purposes. Any scraps from installation and tiles that have outlived their lifespan will be recycled into starter tiles. Before returning them and to receive specific instructions on how to do so, we ask that you contact DaVinci Roofscapes, 855-299-5301, to schedule a return.

Green Roof Systems: November 15th Is America Recycles Day

DaVinci RecyclesAs a manufacturing company, we work daily to be consciously aware of the environment. Moreover, as a roofing manufacturing company, we feel the need to be even more environmentally conscious when creating our green roof systems.

Roofs are something every single building and home has to have - so there are a lot of them. And many of them need to be replaced over time - so what happens to the old roof? What happens when the new roof is being put on? Replacing a roof can lead to quite a bit of waste, often headed for the landfills. So, when creating our synthetic shake shingles and our imitation slate shingles, we have not only examined the manufacturing creation process of our shingles, but we have also looked at what happens after the 50+ years that our roofs are on homes.

Here's how DaVinci celebrates November 15th, America Recycles Day, every day:

  • We make tiles in our own Kansas City, Kansas facility to save energy and transportation cost.
  • We utilize the energy we consume to help heat the plant during the winter months.
  • We use 100% pure virgin resins for our roof tiles to guarantee a sustainable product. Any materials that fail to meet finished specs are recycled for use in our starter tiles.
  • Every DaVinci tile is 100% recyclable.
  • Our Multi-Width shingle system allows for less waste at the job site, therefore less material is needed and wasted.
  • We offer a "Cool Roof" product through our DaVinci EcoBlend® tiles. They are an ENERGY STAR® Qualified Product.
  • We contribute to the LEED® Certification Process.
  • We offer a recycling program that is two fold: contractors can return waste from a job site to our plant for recycling into starter tiles and entire roofs can be returned to our plant for recycling into starter tiles after their 50+ year life has expired. Read more about our recycling program here.

What do you do to support the environment? Do you recycle? In what ways?

It's Energy Awareness Month! 3 Ways DaVinci Conserves

As a roofing manufacturer, we feel it is our duty to be very conscious of our environment and to make sure we are doing everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint. Many times our roofing products are replacing 20 year-old roofs (or older), and more often than not the old roof is going into the dumpster rather than being recycled.

cedar shake alternativeThere are three ways that we go about reducing our carbon footprint:

It is important to us that our 50 year roof systems are also green roof systems so that our Earth stays healthier and happier.

Recycling with DaVinci Roofscapes Roofing Tiles

Environmentally Friendly RoofWhen you are looking into green roof construction, there are many factors to consider. You might want a material that is actually the color GREEN on your roof - or perhaps you are looking for a roofing product that is durable and has superior performance, but that is made in a sustainable manner. Furthermore, perhaps you are looking into green roof systems that are not only sustainable, but can also be recycled once their lifetime is complete.

Meet DaVinci.

Our environmentally friendly roof might be just the thing you're looking for.  Here's why:

  • Contractors or distributors are welcome to bring back any waste from the installation of your roof to have it be recycled at our plant.

  • After the 50 year lifetime of our roof, if you choose to replace it at that time, we will accept the tiles back at our plant for recycling.

  • As indicated in the photo to the right, solar panels can be installed easily on our roofing tiles.

Cost of a DaVinci Roof

Durable Composite RoofingWhat are the main things that you consider when selecting a new roof? Most of our customers go for quality, durability and cost.

Our roofing material is not only beautiful and sustainable but also offers high impact rating, high fire resistance, and much more. The many advantages of our roofing material make it a perfect choice for your dream roof.

If you are worried about the cost, that's understandable because a roof is a large investment.

Here is how you can estimate the total cost of a DaVinci Roof.

First you'll want to consult with a roofing contractor to measure the area of your roof, since cost will depend largely on the area to be covered and as well as the roof material used. A contractor can provide you with accurate measurements and an estimate of the total cost. By determining the pitch of the roof, flashing, ridge vents, and more (more = specific needs for the temperature and weather in your area like ice and water shield and snowguards), a roofer can also recommend the ideal DaVinci Roofscapes products for your project.

Opting for our roofing material should be a one time investment. There is almost no maintenance and many homeowners enjoy extra savings from their insurance company because of our high impact rating and high fire resistance rating. Such durable material will give you a 50 year roof that will stand sturdy and beautiful for the years to come.

Make a wise decision today by choosing our finest quality roofing material and see your neighbors turn green with envy.
