From The Architect's Corner - Deciding on a Synthetic After Living With the Natural

With the new housing market dead, most of the calls I get are concerning renovation and remodel work. A pretty good chunk of the inquires are coming from architects who are helping their clients replace one luxury roof with another, as in a natural slate roof with a synthetic slate roof.

So why are people making the switch? Really, cost is the major reason. If you have a slate roof, you must have it checked annually. Inevitably there are broken slates which must be fixed. So a contractor is hired and he goes up on the roof to fix the broken slates which usually creates more broken slates (and the cycle continues). So after years and years of maintaining the roof it is time to replace. The cost to install a natural slate roof can be astronomical so this is when it could be time to consider an alternative.

DaVinci Slate is essentially a fake slate, but the performance and aesthetic quality are anything but. It is Class A Fire Rated, Class 4 Impact Rated, and Wind Certified to 110 mph.

Below are a few pictures to illustrate how great a DaVinci roof looks, even as a replacement for natural slate.
