Underwriters Laboratories is a non-profit, highly trusted organization which tests and sets safety standards for roofing materials and other commodities. The UL 2218 standard, tests for the impact resilience roofing materials possess. This testing is done by hitting the sample with a two inch steel ball. Based on how the material withstands such a beating, it is rated on a scale of 1 to 4, with Class 4 rating indicating highest resistance to impact.
