Dreaming of a Composite Slate Roof … on a Bargain Mansion!

Tamara Day has a great job. She buys run-down, beat-up homes for a bargain … and then returns them to their “mansion” status. For a recent home project in Kansas City, she relied on composite slate roofing from DaVinci Roofscapes to help her transform a property.

“I don’t just flip these homes,” says Day, host of Bargain Mansion television show on the DIY Network. “I love them and design every detail with a historic and modern perspective. I save what I can, but I bring in modern beauty every chance I get.”

New Roof for Old Home

For the home on Locust Street in Kansas City, there was  no chance to save the dilapidated roof.

“From day one we knew we had to replace the old roof,” says Day. “What we didn’t know was that it had five layers of roofing that we had to pull off. It was the worst roof installation I’ve ever seen … and the weight of five layers was literally breaking the rafters and supports.

“Much of the roof infrastructure had to be replaced. We researched roof replacement options in Kansas City and were thrilled to discover DaVinci Roofscapes.

“When we saw the beauty of the DaVinci synthetic slate it became our first choice for this home. The lightweight nature, combined with the long-term low maintenance aspects of the roof made it an obvious choice for us.”

Classic Roof Color

For the home transformation Day selected Bellaforté Slate in a Smokey Gray color. She relates that the color complements the navy and white of the house.

“Using the DaVinci Smokey Gray color was the perfect mix of historic beauty that would have been ‘date appropriate’ to the home, but with all the modern benefits,” says Day, whose blog also follows her home renovation projects. The roof went up right after we painted the house and trim. It was transforming to say the least. The house went from an eyesore in the neighborhood to a stunning home the minute the roof went up.”

Garage Adds Value

As the renovation progressed, Day and her team decided to add a free-standing garage to the property. Her first call was to DaVinci to get more polymer slate roofing.

“Having a garage makes all the difference when it comes to resale,” says Day. “We estimated that it adds $50,000 to the price of the home. Even more importantly, it was an essential element that brought this 108-year-old home into the 21st century.

“The continuity that flows between the home and the garage is strengthened visually by the Bellaforté roof and exterior products. This home has historical charm married with contemporary style — all in a prestigious Kansas City neighborhood.”

Now on the market for $599,000, the transformation of the revitalized home can be seen on several episodes of Bargain Mansions on DIY Network. Visit the show’s website for more details on the Locust Street home and other projects Day has tackled in the area!
